SIXTEEN

Julien stepped back and remained behind his silver barrier as the black orbs of pain raced at him. Peaches launched another attack. This time I could see my hellhound had increased his mass as his paws dug into the arena, gouging the stone as he ran at Julien.

Peaches leapt at Julien when he was about three feet away.

Julien, without even looking at Peaches, opened a hellhound-sized silver lattice portal. Peaches was locked into his trajectory and ended up sailing right in. The silver lattice wrapped itself around Peaches, trapping him as he disappeared.

“Ignis vit—ow!” I yelled, as a portal opened behind me and a hellhound missile crashed into my back, knocking the air out of my lungs, and launching me across the arena floor.

Peaches rolled with me for a few seconds, our limbs getting tangled up in each other. We ended up several feet away from the edge of the dawnward.

It took a few seconds for us to get untangled. I looked up and saw Monty’s orbs crash into the silver barrier in rapid sequence.

The first orb hit and cracked the barrier, the second orb managed to create a large hole in the silver wall, and the third made it through and slammed into Julien with an explosion of black energy.

For a few moments, I lost sight of him.

That was a mistake.

When the energy cleared, he was nowhere to be seen, but I sensed him close.

“Where is he, Monty?”

“The energy of the arena has camouflaged his location,” Monty said, before sliding to my side and shoving me and Peaches into the dawnward. “There!”

I looked up into Julien’s smiling face. He was about twenty feet above us and holding a black orb of his own.

“Mage Montague, I believe this belongs to you,” Julien said, looking down at us. “Allow me.”

Julien threw the orb at us with an overhand swing of his arm.

Monty slid into the dawnward next to me and began gesturing. A golden lattice of energy reinforced the dawnward as the orb fell on us.

For a second, the reinforced dawnward held—until it didn’t.

The black orb of energy descended into us and exploded.

It was the last thing I remembered before the arena vanished.
